D(-) Lactic Acid

BioEnergy has achieved what few players have: the commercialization of a revolutionary and disruptive renewable biochemical.

Over the last year, BEI successfully commercialized its first renewable product, D(-) lactic acid, for the manufacture of bioplastics with its strategic partner PURAC, the world’s leading lactic acid producer (70% + market share). BioEnergy developed and patented the proprietary biocatalyst process for the production of D(-) lactic acid, and due to the high purity of its output, BioEnergy’s production technology is the world’s only commercially viable process.

D(-) lactic acid is the critical chemical component used in the production of unique, thermally stable polylactic acid (“PLA”), a biodegradable plastic made from renewable resources. The enhanced thermal properties open new higher value plastics markets to these next generation PLA bioplastics and represents an important technological advancement for the bioplastics industry, which is expected to grow to over $12 billion annually. Full-scale commercial production of D(-) lactic acid will begin June 2008.
